THE TIME IS HERE !!!!!
THE FIRST FISH HAS BEEN CAUGHT !!!
Spring that is......the best time of the year for us and most of you fishermen out there !!!
This is the #1 busiest time of the year for us and yes we are totally slammed and busting our chops getting product ready for the upcoming Spring 2016' !!!
We've added some new retailers this month, and I'd like to welcome SAM'S in Orange Beach, Al. and Handler Fishing Supply in Merritt Island, Fla. to the family. If you have a favorite shop you visit and they don't carry "Southern Salt" lures / jigs....tell them to give me a call.
The "Jig Tree" at Strike-Zone Fishing in Melbourne, Fla.
Welcome to Southern Salt Tackle Co. and Custom Lures...........home of the Handmade "Cobia Caine" jigs !!!!
This whole crazy tackle business started for me and my family back in 1999' (shortly after I graduated college) when I came across an old timer that lived down on the Gulf Coast. He had been hand tying cobia jigs since he was young. Over his many years of fishing and learning he created what most folks would call the "PERFECT" cobia jig. He got to an age where he just wanted to chill and not have the responsibility of supplying the customer base he had built up over the years. Long story short I bought a few pieces of the equipment he did have, the miscellaneous supplies, customer list, etc. and began to toy with what he had perfected.
I started out by panhandling our jigs on the Piers that dot the coast of the Fla. Panhandle........I then started getting some eyes looking my way and orders started coming in from Tackle Shops in the same area..........after only a couple of years I realized we were doing something that everyone seemed to like and our orders were basically larger than what I could handle alone, as it is a very labor intensive process from the initial pouring of the jig to the finished product. I knew I would have to streamline our building process one way or another.
We are just a small family owned business where everyone in the family (including our 5 kids.....oldest being 15 and the youngest twin girls being 7 ) helps out in one way or another. The girls like throwing in their 2 cents on what colors are the "prettiest" !! Ha !! My son and I like the "field testing" of the jigs.......especially when we introduce a new color or size. And yes we still build each and every jig one at a time by hand........this is not like a manufacturing line in China ! We base our business on quality and not quantity !! We have never changed the molds the old timer used or the basic model he used, however we have implemented new and brighter colors and patterns, updated molded eyes, and added a couple of new pieces of equipment that has sped up a few of our processes.
At first we were mainly selling our jigs along the Fla. panhandle........after a couple of years we moved into the East coast of Fla. and the Keys.......that was 8-9 years ago.......we now deliver and ship jigs all over the world, including more than 34 different countries just this past year. We supply everyone from the small fisherman that fishes once or twice a year to the larger tackle shops that will go through 1000 jigs a week during their prime season.
WHAT MAKES OUR JIGS SPECIAL - We start by pouring by hand one at a time (we do have a new mold where we can pour 6 at a time also...YEA !! ), we then have a very unique painting process that each jig goes through that we can't disclose or we'd have to throw you in the river!! The paint is as tough as steel and will not chip or peel......ask me how I know.....we tested them on jetty rocks and buoys extensively!! It's also some of the coolest, brightest, and most unique paint jobs you'll ever see............my wife has friends that use them to decorate their Christmas trees....REALLY !! They are each then hand tied with different color patterns that will match the paint..........some have feathers, tinsel, nylon hair, flashabou, and a myriad of other materials that make them so different. We will then finish them off with wild-colored molded eyes that will also coordinate and a clear coat epoxy that seals everything together !!! Truly creating one of the most unique jigs you'll ever toss !!! We do call these "Cobia" jigs, but they will catch absolutely ANYTHING !!! We have charter captains that carry 20 of each color on their boats at all times for amberjack, grouper, snapper, kings, etc. !!!
Over the years we have also added several different terminal items that we used ourselves and now carry in stock. We carry a full line of swivels and various hooks that will finish loading up your tacklebox. It has been said that our "Southern Salt" Ball Bearing swivels and split rings are unmatchable in the industry !!!! There are actually several large manufacturers of different types of lures and rigs that now swear by our swivels and rings.......a few of which you will see in Cabela's and a couple of other big box retailers. Our pricing reflects that we love what we do and we still offer that small town type atmosphere with very little overhead to drive our pricing up.
SO COME GET YOU SOME "SOUTHERN SALT" AND THANKS FOR VISITING !!!!! SEE YA ON THE WATER !!!!
